Why Do I Need a Doula? How a Doula Can Help During Birth
Why Do I Need a Doula? How a Doula Can Help You During Birth
Pregnancy and birth are powerful, life-changing experiences — but they can also feel overwhelming, especially with so many unknowns. That’s where a doula comes in. A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and shortly after birth. We don’t replace your medical care provider; we walk alongside you, helping you feel informed, supported, and empowered every step of the way.
Here’s how having a doula on your birth team can make a real difference.
1. Continuous Emotional Support
Unlike doctors or nurses who may come and go during your labor, a doula stays by your side the entire time. Whether your birth is a few hours or a few days, I’m there to offer calm reassurance, encouragement, and comfort — for both you and your partner.
2. Comfort Measures for Labor
I’ll guide you through proven comfort techniques to help manage pain and encourage your labor’s progress, such as:
Massage and counterpressure
Breathing techniques
Position changes
Use of birth balls or rebozos
Soothing touch and relaxation cues
3. Advocacy & Information
During labor, things can happen quickly, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. As your doula, I help you understand your options and remind you of your birth preferences. I don’t make medical decisions for you, but I do help you communicate with your care team so you can make informed choices.
4. Support for Your Partner
Partners often want to be helpful but aren’t always sure what to do. I offer guidance so your partner can be involved at a level they’re comfortable with. I can suggest hands-on comfort measures, give them breaks, and make sure they also feel supported.
5. Reduced Intervention Rates
Research shows that having a doula present during labor can lead to:
Shorter labors
Less need for pain medication
Lower rates of interventions like vacuum or forceps
Higher rates of spontaneous vaginal birth
Lower cesarean rates
6. Better Birth Experience
At the heart of it, a doula’s role is to help you feel safe, respected, and cared for. Birth memories last a lifetime, and I want you to look back on yours feeling proud, heard, and supported — no matter how your birth unfolds.
A doula doesn’t just show up for your birth — we prepare together, build trust, and create a plan that honors your needs.
If you’re pregnant in Lancaster County, PA, (or surrounding counties) and want to feel supported from pregnancy through your first moments with your baby, I’d love to talk about working together.

Why Do I Need a Postpartum Doula? How a Doula Can Help You After Birth
Why Do I Need a Postpartum Doula? How a Doula Can Help After Birth
Bringing your baby home is beautiful — and it can also be exhausting, emotional, and full of change. The postpartum period, sometimes called the “fourth trimester,” is a time of healing, adjustment, and learning. Yet, so many new parents are expected to figure it all out alone.
A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and practical support during this tender transition. My role is to care for you as you care for your baby, helping you feel confident, rested, and supported.
Here’s how a postpartum doula can make a difference for your family.
1. Emotional Support & Reassurance
The early weeks can bring big emotions — joy, love, anxiety, tears, and everything in between. I’m here to listen without judgment, answer your questions, and reassure you that what you’re feeling is normal. You don’t have to go through this alone.
2. Help With Newborn Care
Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your family, I can help you learn and feel confident with:
Feeding (breast/chest, bottle, or combination)
Soothing techniques
Infant sleep basics
Baby wearing
Understanding your baby’s cues
Important referrals to specialized professionals
3. Practical Help Around the Home
Healing and bonding take priority in the early weeks. I can help lighten your load so you have more time to rest and connect with your baby by:
Preparing nourishing snacks or simple meals
Light tidying up or organizing baby areas
Running a load of laundry
Entertaining older siblings so you can rest
4. Support for the Whole Family
Partners often need support too. I can help them learn newborn care, create routines that work for everyone, and make sure they also feel confident in their role.
5. Gentle Guidance, Not Pressure
Every family is different. My job isn’t to tell you how to parent — it’s to help you find your way with information, encouragement, and care.
6. A Smoother Transition
Research shows that parents who have postpartum support experience:
Lower rates of postpartum depression and anxiety
Higher breastfeeding/chestfeeding success rates (if they choose)
More rest and quicker recovery
Increased confidence in caring for their baby
Postpartum doulas help you feel cared for, capable, and connected during one of life’s biggest changes.
If you’re in Lancaster County, PA, and want in-home support during your baby’s first weeks and months, I’d love to talk about how I can help.

The Healing Power of Infant Massage: A Gentle Beginning for You and Your Baby
The Healing Power of Infant Massage: A Gentle Beginning for You and Your Baby
Bringing a baby into the world is a profound experience—but it’s not always easy. Whether your little one arrived early, came to you through adoption, or the birth experience was more intense than you’d hoped, it can take time for both of you to settle, bond, and feel safe in your new rhythm together.
That’s where infant massage comes in.
Not just a luxury or a trend—infant massage is a gentle, intentional way to help babies feel more at home in their bodies and more connected to their caregivers. As a parent, it’s a beautiful tool to build confidence, slow down, and nurture your baby in a meaningful way.
Benefits of Infant Massage
Infant massage can help:
Soothe fussiness and support better sleep
Ease gas, colic, and digestive discomfort
Strengthen the parent-baby bond
Encourage healthy attachment after adoption
Regulate stress and support nervous system development—especially after a NICU stay or difficult birth
Build your confidence and intuition as a caregiver
It’s not about doing it perfectly. It’s about presence, touch, and tuning in.
I'm Looking for 4 Families
I’m currently offering a special opportunity as I complete my infant massage educator certification through Infant Massage USA.
I’m looking for 4 families to work with me in a relaxed, supportive setting. You’ll receive:
Four guided sessions (once a week for 4 weeks)
Personalized instruction on how to safely and confidently massage your own baby
A space to ask questions, tune into your baby’s cues, and connect
This is by donation only (you choose the amount that feels right to you), and in exchange, you’ll provide a brief evaluation as part of my certification process.
I’m especially hoping to serve families who:
Had a premature baby
Welcomed their baby through adoption
Are healing after a difficult or traumatic birth
I’m still deciding whether these sessions will be in-home or in a small group class format—I'll tailor the setting based on who joins and what feels supportive.
Interested? Or Know Someone Who Might Be?
If this speaks to you—or someone you know—please reach out or pass my info along! This is a short-term, heartfelt offering to support families who need some extra gentleness and connection in the early days.
Send me a message or email [insert email or contact info here].
Let’s create a calm, connected start for your little one.
With care,
Angela Vale

My art in a local cafe!
July Artist Feature at Slate Cafe: A Celebration of Color, Emotion, and Story
I’m so excited to share that I’m the featured artist at Slate Cafe in Lititz for the month of July!
This show is especially meaningful to me — not just because it’s my first time exhibiting in a local café, owned by a childhood friend who I adore, but because every piece on the wall holds part of my own healing, reflection, and becoming. The collection includes expressive abstract paintings that explore emotion through color, movement, and texture. Some were born in silence and solitude; others came to life during women’s retreats or in the quiet hours of my own transformation.
Each painting is offered with its own title card and price, and they’re available for purchase directly at the cafe register. If a piece speaks to you, I’d be honored for it to find a home with you.
More than anything, this show is an invitation — to pause, feel, and see what rises in you as you take it in. My hope is that these paintings don’t just decorate a wall, but open a small doorway into presence.
If you’re local to Lancaster County, I’d love for you to stop by Slate Cafe, grab a coffee or tea, and take a moment to linger with the art. Bring a friend. Bring your journal. Just be.
Thank you for supporting local art, small businesses, and the vulnerable beauty of creative expression.
With love,
Angela Vale
Can you have it all?
For many women who’ve spent years building careers they love, motherhood can arrive with both joy and disorientation. After investing so much into your work, you may find yourself surprised by how all-consuming early parenthood is — how much time, energy, and emotional bandwidth it requires. The promise that “you can have it all” often starts to feel more like “you can have it all, but not at the same time.” You probably want to keep investing in the career that you’ve spent so much energy already building. It’s just that doing both - keeping up with your career and being the mom you want to be to your baby - feels almost impossible.
This isn’t about choosing one or the other. Every woman will find their own way. As a postpartum doula, I can help ease the transition for you, as you navigate what’s right for you and your family. I am here to lighten the load, to support you emotionally and practically, and hold the moment with you. As you walk this sacred road.
Contact me if you’d like to learn more about how I can support you postpartum.

Doulas at a Birth Center
Choosing a birth center like Birth Care & Family Health Services in Georgetown, PA offers a warm, home-like environment for your birth experience. But even in such a supportive space, many families choose to have a birth doula by their side—and for good reason.
As a doula, my role complements the care provided by midwives and nurses. While your clinical team focuses on your physical health and safety, I’m there to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support—from early labor through birth and the first golden hour with your baby.
What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?
Welcoming a new baby is a beautiful—and sometimes overwhelming—experience. Many families in Lancaster, PA are discovering the benefits of hiring a postpartum doula to help ease the transition into life with a newborn. But what does a postpartum doula really do?
